按照制片方计划，《小丑2》的故事将具有一定的回溯性。一部分故事将会发生在阿卡姆疯人院。在某种程度上，本片会具有前传色彩。《小丑》的故事背景设定在20世纪80年代，一位生活陷入困境的喜剧演员渐渐走向精神崩溃，在哥谭市开始了疯狂的犯罪生涯，最终成为了蝙蝠侠的宿敌。
演职员方面，除了华金·菲尼克斯回归出演小丑外，Lady Gaga饰哈莉·奎茵，托德·菲利普斯回归执导。目前，该续集被定在了2024年的10月4日上映，而这也是《小丑》上映五周年的纪念日。
