宗华从1969年起，出演《独臂刀王》《大军阀》《侠义双雄》等。在1976年，宗华首次担任男主，出演第一版《流星蝴蝶剑》，饰演主角“孟星魂”的他被观众所熟知。
曾与其饰演父子的演员陈晓东受访时得知这一消息痛心道：“影视界失去一个很重量级的人物，很惋惜。”
