简介:The Doll is a film adaptation of Bolesław Prus's popular Polish novel, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest works of Polish literature. It draws inspiration from Émile Zola and has been compared to Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary. Stendhal's The Red and the Black is a better comparison for the movie than Madame Bovary. \n\nThe Doll offers a sweeping account of life in Warsaw in the late 19th century, telling the tale of three generations of idealistic Poles dealing with moral dilemmas, historical developments, and social dramas. The story also depicts the erosion of social connections and the increasing isolation of a society whose elite aristocrats are consumed by vanity and idleness. The backdrop of a backward nation laid the groundwork for the genesis of anti-Semitic ideas, creating hardship for individuals of worth and paving the way for scoundrels to succeed.\n\nThe narrative follows Stanislaw Wokulski, an ambitious merchant, in his romantic pursuit of the aristocratic beauty Izabela Lecka. As a young man, Wokulski was compelled to work in a Warsaw restaurant while dreaming of a career in science. Following the failed 1863 Uprising, he was forced to exile in Siberia. Eventually, he returned to Warsaw and began selling haberdashery items at Mincel's. After marrying the widow of the previous owner, he became wealthy and collaborated in a business partnership with a Russian merchant he'd met while in exile. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, he traveled to Bulgaria with the Russian Army and made a fortune. Wokulski was now a romantic at heart and fell in love with Izabela, the bankrupt aristocrat Tomasz Lecki's daughter. \n\nTo gain Izabela's hand in marriage, Wokulski started frequenting aristocratic salons and theaters. To help her indebted father, he established a company and made the aristocrats shareholders. Wokulski's business acumen earned him respect, but aristocrats looked down on him because he lacked family and social status. Izabela discovered Wokulski's love for her due to his secret assistance to her financially distressed father. Eventually, Izabela accepted Wokulski's proposal, but without genuine love or devotion.
