Set in the late 16th century in the Moravian Karst, the film is a stunning visual masterpiece with remarkable framing, motion, and positioning. Although the story is simple, it is still engaging, and the acting is excellent, particularly from the villains. The music, composed by Zden?k Liška, is also evocative and complements the scenes well. While The Devil's Trap may not be a masterpiece, it is a strong effort that captures a glorious historical setting, making it an excellent starter before watching Vlá?il's more challenging films, Marketa Lazarová and The Valley of the Bees. Surprisingly, this gem remains largely overlooked and ignored.

Thanks to Eisenstein's genius, the film's powerful imagery and lyricism captured the attention of the count and breached even the thick walls of his aristocratic Schloss. The film manages to preserve its artistic merits while serving as propaganda, with exceptional metaphors and social criticism that comment on issues such as illiteracy, bureaucracy, and religiosity. It also sheds light on ancient customs in Russia, which Dame Marfa and her fellow countrymen fight against while trying to improve their lot. The film covers various aspects of agriculture, including harvesting, fatten cows or pigs. Despite the censorship and mutilation of the film during Eisenstein's final era, it was fortunately restored and shown by the German-French TV channel \"ARTE,\" with a music score by Herr Taras Bujewski that perfectly complements Herr Eisenstein's primal artistic interests. The count, fascinated by the film, decides that he must buy a tractor for one of his Teutonic heiresses."

This film tied for the Grand Prize at the Mannheim Film Festival in 1969.　　Slovak director Dusan Hanak was one of Czech cinema's brightest and best talents of the '60s and '70s, but because of censorship this was not manifest until the late '80s. Dusan made an impact on the film world with his auspicious debut 322 (1969). Though banned until 1988, when it was finally released, it earned international acclaim and the Grand Prix award at the Mannheim Film Festival. Hanak's sophomore effort, the documentary Obrazy Stareho Sveta/Image of an Old World (completed in 1972), was also not released until 1988 and neither was his 1980 film Ja Milujem, Ty Milujes/I Love You, You Love. Only Hanak's 1976 film Ruzove Sny/Rose-Tinted Dreams passed muster with censors and saw a timely release.
